The paid social creative testing framework we use for every client

Targeting matters less every year. Creative is now the main lever on Meta. This is how we plan, test, and refresh it without wasting budget.

With broad audiences and Advantage+ campaigns, Meta now does most of the targeting work for you. That leaves creative as the biggest lever you control. The problem is that most teams test creative randomly: a new image here, a new headline there, with no plan for what each test should teach them.

This is the framework we use to make creative testing systematic.

Step 1: Start with angles, not assets

An angle is the reason someone should care. Before designing anything, we list five to eight angles based on customer reviews, sales calls, and support tickets. For a meal kit brand, angles might include saving time on weeknights, eating healthier without planning, cutting food waste, or cooking with kids.

Each angle becomes a small group of ads. Testing angles first tells you which message resonates, which is far more useful than learning that a blue background beat a green one.

Step 2: Match formats to each angle

Once an angle wins, we test it across formats:

  • User-generated video: a real customer explaining the result in their own words.
  • Founder or expert video: credibility and the story behind the product.
  • Static image with a clear claim: fast to produce and often strong for retargeting.
  • Carousel: useful for showing a range of products or step-by-step processes.

Step 3: Structure tests so results are readable

We run new creative in a dedicated testing campaign with a fixed budget, separate from the scaling campaign. Each test gets three to five ads. We wait until each ad has enough data, usually around 50 conversions or a clear cost difference over at least a week, before moving winners into the main campaign.

A creative test that does not teach you something about your customer is just spending money with extra steps.

Step 4: Catch fatigue before it costs you

Even winning ads wear out. We watch three signals every week:

  • Frequency rising above three to four in prospecting campaigns
  • Click-through rate falling for two weeks in a row
  • Cost per result climbing while spend stays flat

When two of these move together, we introduce fresh variations of the winning angle instead of starting over from scratch.

Step 5: Keep a creative log

Every test goes into a simple log: the angle, the format, the hook, the result, and what we think it means. After a few months, this log becomes the most valuable asset in the account, because it shows exactly what your customers respond to.

A note on regulated categories

Health, finance, and other restricted categories need extra care. Meta does not allow ads that imply someone has a personal health condition or financial difficulty. Write about the product and the outcome in general terms instead of the reader's situation, and keep landing pages consistent with the ad. We used this approach for an at-home testing brand to restore ad approvals.
