Local SEO for service businesses: the Google Business Profile checklist
For service businesses, the Maps pack often brings more calls than the website. This checklist covers what to set up, what to post, and what to avoid.
For plumbers, clinics, care providers, restaurants, and other local businesses, the three results in the Google Maps pack often drive more calls than the website itself. Ranking there depends on three things Google describes openly: relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot move your address, but you can control the rest.
Profile setup
- Business name: use your real-world name. Adding keywords to the name can get the profile suspended.
- Primary category: choose the most specific category for your main service. This is the most important ranking setting on the profile.
- Secondary categories: add only those that genuinely describe other services you offer.
- Service area: if you visit customers, list the areas you serve and hide your address if customers do not visit you.
- Hours: keep regular and holiday hours accurate.
- Services and products: list each service with a short description.
Content and activity
- Upload real photos of your team, premises, vehicles, and work, not stock images.
- Post updates, offers, or news regularly so the profile stays active.
- Answer common questions in the Q&A section yourself.
- Turn on messaging only if someone will reply quickly.
Reviews are not only a ranking factor. They are often the deciding factor for the person choosing between you and the business next door.
Reviews
Ask every satisfied customer for a review, ideally right after a successful job or appointment, with a direct link. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and without sharing private details. Never buy reviews or offer incentives, which breaks Google's policies.
Citations and consistency
Make sure your business name, address, and phone number match exactly across your website, social profiles, and major directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google to trust which information is correct.
Your website still matters
Link the profile to a page that matches it. Multi-location businesses need a unique page for each location with its own address, phone number, services, and directions, plus LocalBusiness structured data. Duplicate location pages with only the city name changed tend to be filtered out.
We used this checklist to help a multi-location dental group rank all five clinics in the local pack, and to raise local visibility for PeaceWay Care, a medical transportation company in Phoenix.
